Bleaching/Tooth Whitening

By combining teeth whitening options, Dr. Mishaan offers his patients, from all over New York, a faster and more efficient method than traditional tray bleaching. Dr. Mishaan uses state-of-the-art Zoom teeth whitening to safely brighten your smile in less than two hours at his New York dental office. During the treatment, you can listen to music or watch a movie, and by time your through, you will have a brand new smile! To keep their new look intact, Dr. Mishaan will also put his patients on an at-home whitening schedule. This usually consists of a short course of tray bleaching sessions that will ensure that the teeth do not revert back to their original shade. This also allows for easier and more affordable touch-ups to the teeth, should they be needed.

Dr. Mishaan can also help suggesting more mild treatments such as whitening toothpastes or over-the-counter whitening treatments such as whitening strips. Many times, patients will not require drastic means for whitening their teeth. If you feel like you would like to begin using any of these products, it is important to consult your dentist beforehand. A dentist can advise you on the proper products for your needs, as well as, the proper way to use them.

Why whiten your teeth?
A smile is one of the most noticeable features of the face. Dental bleaching provides a whiter, brighter, and a more attractive smile. As a person ages, the mineral structure of the teeth starts to alter and the enamel becomes less porous, causing tooth darkening. Additionally, teeth become discolored from staining substances (tobacco, soda, coffee), trauma, excessive fluoride, bacteria, old fillings or nerve damage. Tooth whitening lightens natural teeth via a carbamide peroxide gel or paste applied to teeth.

These materials, worked much better than whitening toothpastes.

Does whitening material harm teeth?
Sides effects of bleaching can include tooth sensitivity and tissue irritation. These are temporary conditions and disappear within 1-3 after halting treatment. If teeth are periodontically involved, are sensitive. or are receding, a dental consultation is recommended before using a tooth whitening system. Journal of Dental Association (JADA) has illustrated in their research that tooth bleaching is safe, provided that the dispensing of the bleaching gel is done via professional.

Who is a candidate for bleaching?
Many people are candidates for bleaching but one should seek professional opinion prior to treatment. Bleaching is not recommended for children under the age of 18, in pregnant or lactating women. Bleaching will not lighten crowns (caps) or composite bonding material ( tooth colored fillings). This is crucial when restorative work is present in the mouth; once the bleaching is completed the crowns or fillings may not match the lightened bleached teeth. Teeth that are affected by heavy grey or brown spotted tetracycline bands will not respond positively to bleaching. Non-vital teeth are stained internally and do not lighten from external bleaching; a process called internal bleaching must be done to achieve optimal results.

How is the whitening process achieved?
Whitening can be done at home or in office. At home whitening involves using a thin plastic like mouth-guard that can hold the bleach around the teeth for several hours. The results of take-home or over-the-counter bleaching varies based on type of application, the individual’s compliance and the method at which the whitening is done. The bleaching treatment can vary from 30 minutes to a few hours, depending on the concentration of the gel used. Individuals repeat the process for a few weeks, until the ideal color shade is reached.

Office bleaching requires patients to come in for a short appointment where strong peroxide paste is applied to all the teeth. Lights and lasers are generally used to expedite the process. This short course of bleaching produces dramatic improvements in the aesthetic appearance of discolored teeth. Two in-office methods to achieve such results include, BriteSmile and Zoom! whitening techniques.
